Trip Report: Wild Hearts and Alpine Escapes
There’s something extraordinary about stepping away from the noise of everyday life, unplugging, and heading into the wild with your closest friends. This summer, we embarked on a three-day guided hiking journey through British Columbia’s Big Creek Provincial Park and South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park with Tyax Adventures. It was more than just a hike; it was a chance to bond, reconnect, and create memories we’ll cherish forever.
Day 1: From Sky-High to Scree Slopes
Our adventure began in style, loading up into the floatplane and lifting off from Tyaughton Lake, in front of Tyax Lodge. We looked in awe as the beauty of the South Chilcotins unfolded below us, the plane carrying us over endless ridges and valleys before touching down at the brilliantly blue Lorna Lake.
From there, we began our trek uphill, feeling relieved to know that Tyax Adventures had taken care of all the heavy lifting—literally. With no camping or days’ worth of food to carry, we could focus on enjoying the experience with light backpacks as we made our way up and over Lorna Pass.
Midway through the hike, Peter, our camp host, surprised us by trail-running up to deliver freshly baked cookies—a gesture that instantly became a favourite moment of the trip. We took a moment to have a snack break as Peter continued his loop back to camp. We soaked in the moment and watched mountain sheep traverse the steep slopes in the distance.
After our ~15km day, we were greeted at Bear Paw Camp with comforts far beyond what a usual multi-day hiking trip in the backcountry includes —canvas-lined tents with cozy sleeping bags, a charcuterie board waiting for us, and even camp Crocs to slip into. Over a hearty Greek meal and berry crumble that night, we talked and laughed, excited for the next few days ahead.
Day 2: Lush Valleys and Creek Crossings
Day two began with the smell of bacon and coffee wafting through camp, setting the tone for another unforgettable day. Peter laid out a breakfast spread that fueled us for the 18 kilometres ahead, and after filling our packs with snacks and lunches, we set off into a drizzly valley.
This day’s hike was a complete contrast to the high alpine of the day before, as the trail wound through lush forests and across flowing creeks. We navigated log bridges and through chilly creek crossings, thankfully knowing a warm cabin was ahead of us to dry out our gear for the following day.
By the time we reached Spruce Camp, we were tired and damp but exhilarated. Gillian welcomed us with a roaring fire in the stove and chips with dip—simple comforts that felt like luxuries in the backcountry. That evening, we played cards and games and ate another hearty meal before crawling into our roomy tents to prepare for our biggest day ahead.
Day 3: Windy Pass and Wild Horizons
Our final day began early, with a quiet moment by Spruce Lake as the morning fog floated above the water. This serene start set the stage for a big day—24 kilometres of hiking back to Tyaughton Lake.
As we climbed toward Windy Pass, fireweed lined the trail, and the landscape shifted to reveal the multicoloured beauty of the alpine. On the descent, we spotted a grizzly bear moving gracefully across the valley—a thrilling reminder of the wildness that surrounded us.
Between Windy and Camel Pass, we marvelled at the stunning colours of the South Chilcotin. Orange hills, black rock, and grassy meadows stretched before us, each step offering a new view around every bend. Descending down Camel Pass, we began our final stretch toward home. When we reached the end of our trail, the Tyax shuttle greeted us to take us back to Tyaughton Lake, where a celebratory drink on the patio of Tyax Lodge waited for us. We ended the trip tired but filled with joy – already missing the tranquillity of the backcountry.
This trip wasn’t just about the stunning views or the rewarding hikes—it was about the connection we built along the way. There’s something uniquely special about being out in the wilderness with friends, away from distractions, where conversations flow naturally, and laughter feels freer.
Each night, as we gathered around the fire or tucked into our cozy tents, we felt the kind of bond that only shared adventure can create. This trip gave us the chance to support each other through challenges, celebrate each other’s strengths, and make memories.
